Akwatia By-Election: IGP Reassures Voters over Security
On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) paid a visit to ObenewaPreparatory School, one of the polling stations in the Akwatia Constituency (Eastern Region), to monitor the parliamentary by-election in progress. In his interactions with Electoral Commission officials, he emphasized the Ghana Police Service’s full readiness to uphold peace, transparency, and security throughout the voting process.

The poll, triggered by the passing of the sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, has drawn heightened national interest. Over 50,000 voters are expected to cast ballots in a head-to-head contest between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo
To ensure order before, during, and after the election, the Police Service has deployed more than 5,000 officers across the constituency. They’ve issued a stern warning: any acts of electoral violence, voter intimidation, or breach of regulations will be met with the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has assured stakeholders that all necessary steps are in place for a transparent, credible election. These include timely delivery of materials, vigilant monitoring of voting, and immediate collation of results.
The outcome is seen as a litmus test for political momentum ahead of the 2028 general elections, with both major parties deeply invested in the result.
Finally, the result of the Akwatia by-election is not only about who represents the constituency, but also to strengthen the NDCs two-thirds majority in parliament and the ability to influence national policy direction.
