NDC’s Bernard Baidoo Wins Big in Akwatia, Boosting Party’s Strength in Parliament

On September 2, 2025, the usually quiet Akwatia constituency sprang to life, not just with anticipation, but with the electric energy of change in the air.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a seasoned lawyer with deep roots in community and party affairs, has emerged triumphant in a fiercely contested by-election, reclaiming the seat for the NDC and rekindling hope among its supporters. Baidoo earned 18,199 votes, securing about 54% of the ballots, compared to his rival Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, who garnered 15,235 votes accounting for 45% of the ballots. A third candidate from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Owusu Patrick, trailed with just 82 votes

The win brings more than a fresh face to Parliament’s aisles, it shifts the political balance. With this result, the NDC further strengthens its parliamentary foothold, narrowing the NPP’s margin and bolstering its own legislative influence

But the day wasn’t without its theatrics. Early polling hours saw a tense moment when police arrested a man accused of tearing down campaign posters, an explosive act quickly defused before it could disrupt the vote. Later, at the lorry station, a heated confrontation flared up between an NPP national vice chairman and an NDC escort. Fortunately, calm was swiftly restored thanks to police intervention

This isn’t just a victory on paper, t’s a story of strategy paying off. Baidoo’s win follows a competitive NDC primary in August where he bested strong contenders, including former MP Henry Yiadom Boakye.

In contrast, the late Ernest Yaw Kumi of the NPP had held this seat after a razor-thin win in the 2024 general election, only to pass away in July, triggering this hard-fought contest
